FROM COPENHAGEN TO CALIFORNIA
Born in Switzerland in 1937, HANS MAULI studied art in Zurich at the Kunstgewerbeschule, then lived and worked as a designer and art director in
Copenhagen, London, Paris and New York in the sixties, most notably for Herb
Lubalin in New York and for Young & Rubicam in Paris. In 1971 he switched to
photography and established himself in Paris, primarily but not exclusively
in advertising, for the next 20 years. He worked for major advertising
agencies including Young and Rubicam, J. Walter Thompson, McCann Erickson,
Publicis, Doyle Dane Bernbach and TBWA, and extensively for Sony. In 1991 he
moved with his family to the United States, lived on the East Coast and
traveled extensively throughout the country for a year, then moved to the
Bay Area. One of his prints, Window Dressing, Copenhagen 1960 (pictured left), was acquired by the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art.
FROM COPENHAGEN TO CALIFORNIA exhibits period silver gelatin prints from the years 1959 and 1960 as well as new current work in both traditional and digital media.
Fine still life, landscape, and "people" photography remain MAULI's
specialty, with emphasis on precision and a powerful command of lighting.
